Pürgschachener Moor

raised bog

The upland bog in the Ennstal, a valley in the Austrian province of Styria, is located near the municipality of Ardning, 632 metres above sea level. With a size of 62 hectares, it is the largest, largely intact pine peat bog of Austria. Thus, it is a good example of the formerly widely distributed peat bogs of inner-alpine valleys.


The typical plant communities of the Pürgschachener Moor are Pino mugo-Sphagnetum magellanici (mountain pine upland bog community), Sphagnetum magellanici (coloured bog moss community) and Caricetum limosae (bog sedge community).

Available infrastructure:

  • Eddy Covariance-Tower for determining ecosystem fluxes of methane, carbon dioxide and water vapour
  • Fully automatic measuring chambers for measuring carbon dioxide release and -storage on different plant communities
  • Automatized water gauge network for measuring water level in catchment area consisting of 3 divers for measuring water level, temperature and electrical conductivity and 8 divers for water level gauge
  • Permanent Power Supply
